All throughout the Bible we find baptism to be a conscious choice someone makes to follow after God. Since an infant cannot:make this choice at such a young age, parents can choose a "child dedication" service instead as a way to affirm their desire to raise the child up in an environment where he/she can come to know, love, and trust in Jesus. Child dedications take place in our Sunday morning gatherings througout the year. In this way the family can publicly profess their intent as a sacred vow before God and the church, while also gaining the church as an ally of encouragement, community, trust, and prayer. No one should journey through life alone, not to mention parenting. When a child of any age is able to place their faith in Jesus and articulate that choice, we happily celebrate the sacrament of baptism with them according to their parent's approval. |
